Clinical Pilates is a patient specific exercise program designed to increase strength of the stabilisation muscles of the body. By improving the strength of the stabilisation muscles of the body we improve posture, increase body awareness, relieve back and neck pain, and improve the efficiency of the body by allowing the correct muscles of the body to function at the correct times.
Individual sessions, semi-private sessions and classes are available for the benefit of patients, allowing them to take part in a strengthening program that is specifically suited to the individual. The Pilates instructors are certified, and have had intensive training with Andrew Jansen Van Rensburg (BSc Physiotherapy) to specialise in Clinical Pilates working to rehabilitate patients as part of a holistic team.
Clinical Pilates will also improve energy efficiency during activity. As such swimming, cycling, running, golf etc has been proven to improve with strong core muscles.
Stabilizing Muscles of the Spine & Torso Core muscles that are strong and doing an efficient job at stabilizing are the key to well being. These core muscles create a muscular girdle around your body to keep you upright and are the key to not just appearance, but to optimal health and strength.
Pilates for children
The Endurance Sports and Wellness Centre employs a fun filled Pilates approach to ameliorate muscular disorders in children and young adults. The entire Pilates system focuses on improving muscle strength, tone, posture and body alignment.
Why the need for children’s Pilates? General Pilates principles remain the same, however the difference in kids’ and adults’ Pilates lie in the approach. For instance, terminology used is suited to fit the child’s vocabulary and all accessories and equipment used are fitted to match the child’s size. Each child’s concentration span, muscle tone and general ability differs. We work at the child’s pace, gradually increasing exercises from simple to complex all the while ensuring that each session is fun yet structured and purposeful.
We aim to activate movement that stimulates special receptors in joints and muscles to improve proprioceptive sense in young ones battling with uncoordinated movement and postural balance. Much of the repertoire also involve sensory integration and is focussed on re-educating muscle patterns while the child is still in his or her developing years. By doing this we are assisting occupational therapists and special needs teachers in their aim to help children grow into well adjusted, independent young adults.
